It is an "Italian-style" theater, with a "bonbonnière" décor, which opened its doors in 1844, at the top of the Allées Paul Riquet. Carefully preserved, restored, it is still there -and it is the only one in France-, welcoming the public during the season of the spectacles. The decor is original, the facade with its high reliefs by David d'Angers and its Greek colonnades is being renovated.
It is perhaps for all this that it is classified as a historical monument since 1975. And then, a wink to the history of the theater, a fresco has just been created on its back facade, in homage to the Commedia dell' Arte.
