It has withstood the floods of the Orb since 1134, and even much earlier (its Roman base was enlarged and extended in the Romanesque period). Until the middle of the 19th century, the old bridge was even the only possible passage over the Orb, on the way from Marseille to Toulouse. Charles VII and Louis XI praised it, in letters addressed to the Consuls of Béziers, speaking of a bridge "of great antiquity, sumptuous and of great building". A historical monument since 1963, the Old Bridge has just been cleared, three arches brought to light, and an amphitheater built on its western bank
