The Consuls, under the Roman Republic, were the magistrates of the city. The Languedoc retained this institution. Built in 1664 by the Consuls Gasc and Dijous, in front of the wall of the Château Vieux, the Consular House was the centre of municipal life until the Revolution. Its corner pillar served for a long time as a pillory. Nowadays, this building houses the Tourist Office in the summer.
