In the countryside, Pacarel, a shopkeeper who has retired after "enriching himself in the manufacture of sugar by exploiting diabetics", announces that he has just hired the famous tenor Dujeton to perform the opera his daughter Julie has just composed after Faust, "after Gounod", and which he intends to have performed at "the Opéra, even". Dujeton having just sung in Bordeaux, Pacarel asked his old Bordeaux friend Dufausset to arrange for the tenor to be sent to him...
But then a young man from Bordeaux recommended Dufausset to Pacarel. Without further ado, Pacarel gives the young man a triumphant welcome, for it has to be the tenor in question...
